Diagnosis and Surgery

Was recently diagnosed with advanced multilevel degenerative disease of the lumbar spine.  Most impacted is L4-L5 and L5-S1 where there is severe bilateral neural foraminal stenosis and compression of the existing nerve roots  (ouch).  Also have severe degenerative facet arthropathy at L4-L5 resulting in grade 1 anterolisthesis where there is also severe canal stenosis.

Surgeon recommends anterior lumbar discectomy and fusion with fixation (ALIF) and lumbar laminectomy and fusion with pedicle screws and bone graft.

Been managing pain, numbness, etc for the past 6-7 months with exercise, stretching, massage and spinal decompression which provide temporary relief.

Now need to decide whether to go ahead with surgery this year or wait awhile until it gets really bad.
