Hello, I'm looking for a new mattress to help with my lower back pain.  Our old one, 15 yrs, is not good.  I'm sleeping on the recliner now. lol.  Any suggestions?

  • when I hurt my back I bought a memory foam one 9 years ago. I need to update because the old memory foam don't have a cooling pad but there's some great options out there. Your Dr. or Physio may have suggestions for you. I'm just letting you know what I bought that helped relieve my back pain but I still have back painful but sleep better than the old fashioned bed I had. I heard after 8 years get a new mattress but just something I heard not advice.

I read that sleeping in a recliner can hurt your hips so you may want to speak with your Dr.

  • i use a special lumbar pillow. i think its memory foam. they are about 3" high and fit in your lumbar curve. its improved my quality of sleep a lot. You should ask your PT what they recommend.

  • We bought a sleep number bed which we adjust based on how we're feeling.  Some nights, we find it better to have a very firm mattress.  Other times, a softer mattress feels better.

  • After a few months of lower back pain I ended up buying a new mattress to help sleep more comfortable.

I ended up choosing an ecosa mattress, which has been great (although isn't magic and doesn't stop the pain, it does help me wake up less stiff). It's made up of support foam, latex and memory foam and you can change the layers around for your desired firmness. I had some trouble setting it up since it gets delivered in a box (making it cheaper) which happened to arrive while my partner was at work.

The best part was the 100 night warranty. You have 100 nights to sleep on it to decide if you like it or not, if you dont, you get a full refund and salvos will come and collect to give it to a family in need.

They are also available on a Zipmoney payment plan, so I had 12 months to pay $850 :)

This personally just had many positive aspects for me, including the payments and 100 night trial. It has great support for my back and now mornings are the better part of my day due to pain. The only problem is that you don't get instructions on how to make it a difference firmness, so you have to keep flipping and trying out

I have (had) suffered from low back pain for well over 25 years. I have the same mattress for over 20 years and been in that mattress through the years of LBP and now about 2 years with no LBP. I can no longer claim that my mattress is causing anything. I no longer use a pillow, and I sleep primarily on my back. Often times I will use a 3" soft foam roller under my neck and a 2" soft foam roller under my low back. However, these are not the cure for my back pain, but cumulatively have assisted in my recovery. Basically I no longer think there is one cure-all solution for any chronic pain. This is not to say you are doing the wrong thing by getting a new mattress. It is for different reasons I wish I had a new one :)!
