Is 6 weeks post op safe enough to start using a backpack?

Hi all! I’m at 6 weeks post op, had an L4/L5 fusion (bone graft only). I can walk just fine but sometimes the left side of my hips ache (from too much walking I guess?) and can do without a brace. anyway I’m travelling home on Tuesday by plane and I can’t decide whether to take a backpack or shoulder bag with me as my carry-on; I have a laptop and some other stuff to bring along (they’re not really heavy). Does anyone here use a backpack? How is it? Is/was there any pain?

Thank you!!

@metalle - Please check with your surgeon before using a backpack.  Six weeks sounds too early for me!  With my neck fusions, I had restrictions for at least six months.

  • I had a fusion done 3 months ago and still cannot lift over 10lbs. I would check with surgeon just as nutcase007 suggested. I would think carrying a back pack (depending on the weight) might be risky to your recovery.
