Mystery pain and where to go from here

Hi everyone.  I am 52 yrs. 125 lbs. 5'4     I will try and be brief as possible.  I have read and will continue to read as many postings that I can find here on this site to help guide me to an answer of what is happening to me.

Last Dec my pain started after a night our dancing ( have not danced hard like that in years )  right knee pain started  that gradually stiffened my right front thigh and the right tip of my hip like a vice grip hold and altered my gate significantly. Could not walk without excruciating pain for 3 weeks. Tingles and horrible throbbing pain in my front right thigh area.  Thought it was a blood clot at first. PCP gave ibuprofen (didn't help much)  followed up with P.T. My gate improved but stiffness vice grip hold, tingles, and throbbing did not. Then to Sports Doc, whom said I had an S.I. joint lock and sent to Chiropractor. This helped some what, but the stiffness remained and then the numbness and stiff vice grip hold started on my left hip and left groin area. Over the course of the last 3 months of many Doc visits, I have had a right knee, thigh, hip, and pelvis x-rays all to show normal results.

Changed P.T. and (unknown to me at the time was a McKenzie therapist) the extension floppy pushups exercises (Cobra) made things worse. After 2 day of new therapy I now have lower back pain on top of the other pain and stiffness. On day 3 of new theropy, in a matter of 3 to 5 seconds, my left hip, and left front thigh, all the way down to my knee went almost completely numb and stiffened up 100 times worse than my right leg and the lower back pain traveled all the way up to the middle of my back feeling like someone stabbed a knife in my back and just left it there. At times, I had started to experience back of leg pain that feels more like nerve pain. To ER I went scared as heck, and found that I was ok and was offered muscle relaxers to which I declined. Got rid of the P.T.

PCP ordered a Lumbar MRI ( 3 days ago)  and my finding report, (which I obtained on my own) showed everything is completely NORMAL ???? and mentioned nothing about nerves which to me was odd. I am so new to this. Still have not heard back from my PCP yet. Unreal.

As of today. Post MRI  both of my hips on the sides are painful to the touch, and the top of my legs are still very stiff and hurts to take long strides. My lower back starts hurting after about 15 min. of general house duties. The extreme areas of pain changes a lot. For example, one day my left side hurts more than the right side, then its my back, then its my right thigh. Sometimes lower outside leg pain. I have been getting new and different feelings of tingles all over my body that comes and goes.  I continue to do my core strengthening and stretches ( from the original P.T.)  and I am not seeing progress..

What doctor do I go to from here. A second look at my MRI is in the plans. Do I go to a neuro surgeon first or a bone doctor?? something is not right in my body and all the tests are saying otherwise. Muscle shortening?? I am so lost.  any advice to direction??  I have had it with P.T's. but will continue if I know it will help. Exhausted here.  Thanks for reading.

    hello goldie1
    welcome to spine-health

a second opinion with the mri would be a good start with either a neurosurgeon, neurologist or orthopedic. like david said above, make daily notes of when and why and what happens. take these notes with you and the doctor will be able to get a better picture of what is going on and when.
take care and keep us posted.

  • Maybe ask for a pelvic/abdominal CT. An x-ray may not show enough.

  • thank you so much for the responses.  Really appreciated.

DavidG  -  yes, I have been keeping a pain diary since day 1. No joke but the pain is all over the place, but keep the diary going. Day, activity, pain level, how I feel when I get up in the morning, after exercises ect....  I will def. look into the nerve conduction test as well as the mylogram. ( never heard of that one before)

Memarianbolt   Thank you so much and I will keep you posted.

L4_L5   CT scan is something to think about as well. Ct's make me nervous with the amount of radiation but when push comes to shove I will toughen up and get one but will start with the second opinion on the MRI and look into Davids suggestions before seeing my next specialist and ask about them

    thank you all so much

    Goldie

  • CT technology has improved over the years that the radiation isn’t nearly as much as it used to be.
