used TENS unit on my neck

I have a portable TENS unit I use for my back since I have
DDD, Spinal Stenosis, arthritis, lumbar facet arthropathy, etc.

I also have neck pain for a few years. I used my portable TENS on my neck once for the first time 7 weeks ago. That was a huge mistake since I suffer more than ever with constant neck pain. I thought I was using the unit correctly. I have such sensitivity that I can't touch my neck without suffering. The weird sensation also affects my head when I touch my neck. I can't wear a scarf around my neck, can't wear a hat, can't massage my neck, can't use my recliner, etc. since I have horrible sensations in my neck that go to my head.

I saw several doctors who prescribed meds which don't help at all. My doctors don't
seem to know enough about the TENS & its side effects. I saw a neck & spine specialist, pain management doctor, neurologist, etc.

I just had a MRI & X Ray of my cervical spine. I never knew I have "Ankylosis of a few facets".  So now I am seeing also Rheumatologist.  However the weird suffering I have started after using the TENS weeks ago.

Can anyone tell me what happened with my using the TENS unit?
This is so upsetting since I suffer with so much pain all the
time. I can't find anything on the internet about what I am going through. Please help! Thanks

jsadan - I have used a tens unit for years, but not since my third ACDF this past January.  I once tried putting tens pads on my neck, but only lasted for about 30 seconds.  It was very painful.  I had been warned about used of tens on the neck, but don't remember why.

I have not idea as to why it triggered your pain.  It might be worth asking your rheumatologist.  I hope you have discontinued the use of the tens on the neck.

  • Thanks, I haven't used the TENS since then. My rheumatologist didn't have an answer either. Thanks!

I have used a Tens unit many times in the cervical area.   However, not since I had ACDF.  My therapist told me that you really should stay away from a Tens unit in areas that had fusion.  So, I no longer do it in my cervical area or near my hips
