Why my hip hurts so much-torn cartilage. Anyone else have this?

When is your hip MRI scheduled? Supposedly more modern MRI machines can show labral tears without contrast but it’s my understanding based on my conversations with several doctors that generally a hip MRA is preferred over a hip MRI if the suspicion is a labral tear.

Can you call the imaging facility in advance and verify if their MRI machine is a 3T? A 3T should show a tear. Unfortunately many MRI machines currently used today were manufactured in the mid to late 90s. A 0.5T to 1.5T may not show a tear in the cartilage of the hip if you have one.

The resolution of a 3T is twice as good as a 1.5T and a 1.5T is three times as good as a 0.5T. Simple math.

Many studies show a 3T without contrast shows images just as clear as a lesser quality MRI with contrast. Maybe your doctor didn’t order contrast to save your kidneys the stress of processing the contrast.

Please note I’m not a doctor and get this info from doctors I’ve spoken with.
