Input on Finding a Surgeon to evaluate C2 Otontoid Type 2 fracture.

I am new to the forum and  would like get  some input on methods for selecting a surgeon for the examination/consultation for a c2 odontoid type-2 fracture for my 89 y.o. mother.   I am finding relatively few surgeons that have moderate experience treating this type of fracture .  The experience information was found on various web sites that show insurance and medicare claims for this treatment. Maybe I am not searching correctly.

The number of qualified surgeons becomes even shorter when adding additional recommended criteria of  surgeon's outcome data,  hospital outcome date for procedure and ratings, medicare insurance assignment, and patient reviews.

My mother got the fracture in a fall and there was a CT and an MRI done at the time.  The fracture was stable, she had no symptoms, full strength in all of her limbs, so we decided on non surgical treatment and instead have her wear a cervical collar for 12 weeks. The 12 weeks has passed she is recovering well.  I would appreciate any guidance or help.

  • hello thinker,  I was treated for a fractured C2 odontoid fracture, the odontoid was broken and partially fused to the base of my skull. was untreated for years as, other than a stiff and grindy neck, I seemed to be fairly stable,  for me the fix was to fuse from C0 to C7 and it was the best thing I ever did.  In my case the outcome was very good.  If you look at my posts   piperbill  my journey may give you some insights as to some of the things you may or may now encounter,  If nothing else maybe they will help to generate some questions you can ask of your Dr.  There is not a lot of information out there on this type of fracture so any questions you can ask of your Dr should be very beneficial.. Its a journey but not an insurmountable one.  Hope this helps a little bit. take care piperbill.
