Hematomas are not resolving after ALIF and PLIF

I had both anterior and posterior fusion surgery on November 19th, 2019. L3-L4 and  L5-S1. About 1 week later a number of hematoma appeared below the abdominal incision. Ultra sound was done and the Doctor told me they would reabsorb. For a while I used moist and warm compresses on the area, which seemed to help. As of today I have a number of clots remaining near the crease joining the thigh to the pubic area and a little higher. They are painful to touch and hurt when I move, especially during exercise. Has anyone else experienced this?

As usual,

Thanks for any help,

Scarlet

If it were me, I would contact my doctor again and let him know how painful these are. Or maybe he can recommend something different. From what I have read, they can also be drained.

Take care and keep us posted.

  • I saw a Physical Therapist yesterday who recommended I start manually “milking” the lymph nodes in my groin. I then checked in with the NP at the Surgeons office and she is telling me to seek out a lymphedema specialist in my area. Seemed pretty unsympathetic when I mentioned how painful it is. I have gotten too many different answers to my questioning what these lumps are to even begin to seek out help. Plus, it doesn’t seem to be a very common result of ALIF surgery. I’m hoping someone in this forum has had lumps forming under an ALIF incision that don’t resolve on their own. BTW, my back pain is definitely greatly diminished to being almost totally absent. I am grateful for that.
