Bladder issues with back issues

Hello I'm new here.

Looking for help with what I'm going through.

My doctor diagnosed me with disc degeneration l4-l5 bulging disc and spinal stenosis my age is 37 my back has been like this since 2010 I was injured at work.

The issue I'm having is back pain and I've had in the past a consistent urge to urinate every 20 minutes It seems to come and go but last about a week or so. My doctor sent me to a urologist and I've had 2 CT scans PSA test and all is normal. The urologist said that nerves in my back could cause this to happen.

I'm asking if this is a common issue with back problems having the urge to urinate.

  • @izthewiz I have the EXACT same problem. The urologist blamed it on a pinched nerve in my back too. However, all the spine doctors said my herniation is too small to require surgery. So I’ve been stuck like this for over four years. Mine is a work injury too.

  • izthewiz - I have a SCI injury in my middle cervical area.  My bladder control has been compromised.  Several different specialists all blame it on compromised neurological function.

  • Welcome izthewiz we’re glad you’re here!

I have similar issues that are caused by nerves, like you, everything else checks out, spine surgeon says it does happen sometimes and there is not much that can be done for it.

I also have the same problems. Right now, my sciatic nerve is inflamed and I feel like I could go every 10 mins. My doctor says the same thing, nothing you can do about it.

  • Thank you

This issue just seems to flare up and urge to urinate seems to cause loss of sleep.

I thought about going back to urologist its 5 month wait right now just to make an appointment.

The issue of urination has been gone now for 6 weeks but I've had 2 issues with this within 6 months.

  • @izthewiz I stop drinking all fluids at 4pm and still get up 4-5 times at night to go to the bathroom. It’s torture.

  • Please be careful with a diagnosis.  There are so many things which can cause nocturia or frequent urination.  As I have cervical issues, lumbar issues, thoracic issues and prostate cancer any and all of these may cause this problem.  I would hate to see anyone have surgery and find out the problem was not solved.

Every dr I talk to claims my problem is caused by their specialty.

    God bless us all

  • In addition to frequent urination I have to push really hard to get a stream started. And I have a heck of a time totally emptying my bladder. Sounds like a clear cut case of a urological problem, right? Not according to my urologist. He blames it on a pinched nerve in my low back. And all the neurosurgeons say “Bah! It’s not a pinched nerve.” So frustrating. @dmo
