Every 3 or months my neck locks and swells!!! why?

Greetings all,

Im 33 now.

About 7 years ago i had a traumatic hit on my neck, so traumatic that i thought i was going to blank out. 2 days later after that incident i couldn't get out of my bed and i literally couldn't look left and right. Took about a week to get back to normality.

About 2 years later after the first time i had a traumatic hit, the same pain came back and my neck just locked for no reason. Went away after a week.

Last year, every 3 or 4 months my neck just swells up, locks and i cant look left and right. I have zero idea whats happening. I have been doing all the exercises taking meds and stretches but still nothing. It keeps coming back after 3-4 months for no reason.

Anyone else just get a swollen neck (cervical section) for no apparent reason?

Im thinking of getting x-rays or MRI scan done but should i go when its swollen or after a week of icing and its better? And which one x-ray or mri?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

  • @the_net_guy - I agree with Chip, to see your PCP and likely begin some imaging diagnostics.  Every case is different.

  • Hey, thanks for the replies.

    PCP?

im guessing that means primary care practitioner as in a normal walk in clinic?

Because i have to pay for my own treatment i want to make wise decisions and less on trial and experiments as it can become expensive. Even though, i understand there never is a one magic solution or pill for all problems and usually doctors or professionals usually try different treatments until one works.

i just want to speak to others and then calculate the best decision possible.

And yeah, thanks for the response. My swelling has gone down now too. Going to go to the gym now to do some back exercise to strengthen the area.

I honestly believe something is up around my neck area, possibly around the bones named c6-c7. Onetime i just did a regular rolling session on my back using those massage rollers, felt great, things popped, cracked and managed to deep tissue massage the area but the next day....DDDAAAAMMMMNNN!!!

i neck just swelled up for no reason and went away after 3-5 days.
