I am 7 weeks post-op and will have x-rays next week at 8 weeks to check on the fusion. I still have 5 lb weight limit and am now wearing a soft collar. I wore hard one for 3 weeks. I did not ask the doctor this at my last appt. but will do so next week: I know everyone fuses at different rates. How is the decision made to increase lifting weight limit? I had posted earlier that I am a special education teacher [who does a lot of lifting and restraining :(]...I am looking for experiences of others regarding how much they are allowed to pick up. thanks

  • Hi, I haven't had that surgery, but have you a physiotherapist to help you recover? I hope you heal well from your surgery. And wish you all the best in your healing.
DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • It very much depends upon your rehab progress and should be guided by your physical therapist and surgeon.

Lifting restrictions are more severe on lumber fusion patients but nevertheless you should be guided by your physical therapist based upon how well your recovery is going.
    Keep positive!
