When and how much to exercise

When did you guys start an exercise program? I know it is too soon for me, but was just wondering. I am walking a lot, but feel I could be doing more. I am 3 weeks post surgery and feeling really good. :)


  • Hi, I'm nearly 16 weeks post op now and like you eager to get going again.It was walk,walk,walk and more walk for the first 11 weeks but since then i have started swimming 3 times a week 2500m a time so that breaks the monotony.I rang my surgeons office twice last week about getting back in a gym but haven't heard anything back yet,although his receptionist did say he doesn't allow cycling just yet which i presume means cross trainers as well.I think most people on here would advise keep up the walking, don't over do it no matter how good you feel and follow your specialists advice!   • I am now 23 weeks post op from L5-S1 surgery. My surgery was at the end of June. I have walked 2-3 miles day since week 2. I started doing PT at about 8 weeks. I moved over to a new PT in early Oct at a different clinic. This PT was noted or highly recommended for golf rehab. She has put me on a very good exercise program. My typical morning calls for 30-45 minutes of stretching and core exercises and then 2-3 miles of walking. I began going back to the health club this week lifting some weights every other day. I am starting next week with a certified instructor on additional exercises at my club. I recommend you go slow and steady. Listen to your doctors and physical therapists. Do not over do it. Listen to your body. I highly recommend core exercises and stretching everyday. You will see noticeable results in probably 6 weeks. I feel great and plan to stregthen all core msulces so I can hit the links again next summer. Best of luck.

  • I'm 6 weeks now. I just got off the phone with my NS office. They actually want me to cut back walking. My hips are hurting so I called wondering if I could start a stationary bike but they told me it's too soon.

    When I was in the hospital I was told to try to be moving for 20 minutes of every hour I'm up. When I told that to the PA on the phone to day she said that was too much. She said I could walk 15 minutes for every 3 hours I'm up.

    I'm really stiff and my body feels like it needs a good stretch. My shoulders and arms are so stiff. She said I have to be very, very careful because of my fusion.

    Maybe I'll take my TENS and line that up and down my spine and see if that helps. I'm gonna make an appointment with my PT and see if he can give me any recommendations.

    Slowly going mad from boredom . . . .


  • I had a three level fusion with a NS (Orthopedic Surgeons start PT earlier) I wasn't allowed to start any PT until he saw fusion in the x-rays, which was at 23 weeks. So the only thing I could do was walk, and try to do my stairs once per day. And then it took about 6 weeks after surgery before I could do those two things alright, but not very far. My best excersise was laying on the couch or bed taking a lot of pain pills and dreading needing to go potty using my walker, and toilet seat riser.

    At 23 weeks my PT started me out really really slowly with "core strengthing excersises". And it was a couple of months of just tiny little baby steps.

    So I guess it depends on what you had done?
  • Always seek some professional guidance to the amount and nature of the increase, we all want immediate results and the biggest reason for stopping exercise is doing too much at the start. It is difficult to surmise how much is adequate and the pain normally increases once we have done some increased exercise and await the pain as a consequence. Those changing fluctuations in the level of pain make consistent exercise a problem and we should develop windows of opportunity in when to do more or nothing at all.

    The key is not to stop trying and it may take some time to find the right exercise for you and what works and we need to be resourceful and work toward the next realistic attainable goal, in incremental steps. Some days it will go wrong and we should never stop imagining that with the right help support and encouragement we too can make some improvement and have some control however small.
