I have moderate herniation in L4-L5 disc which is causing pain in lower back and legs. I play sports and drive motorcycle (>50km per day) in a heavy traffic city. I stopped all of them long back. Now I have decided to go for a surgery.
My intention is to get back the old flexible body so that I can once again start playing sports & drive motorcycle. Doc said it is possible. I am curious to know about others experience.

  • I had multiple surgeries on L4-L5-S1, both sides and returned to all sports including wearing heavy dual scuba tanks, decompression bottles and camera gear. Returned to running on treadmill or grass. Flexibility better than before injury.

    Trust your doctor. trust yourself.

  • I have had a laminectomy and 2 fusions (laminectomy and first fusion at L4/L5 and a fusion of L1 thru L5). I have returned to swimming and cycling. I competed in both but have not yet returned to competition. I find that sitting on my narrow bike seat actually makes my back feel better. Guess it acts like one of those sacro wedgies you sit on. I am back in the weight room also. Recovery from surgery takes awhile and you need to be patient but a return to sports is definitely possible.

L4/L5 laminectomy, L4/L5 360 fusion with instrumentation, L1 to L5 fusion, L5/S1 fusion w/ disc replacement, left and right SI joints fused.

  • Wonderful.
I feel better now and can comfortably undergo the surgery. You inspired me. Thanks for pumping me up with the bright prospectus after surgery. I consider to be patient till the recovery is perfectly alright to the body.
  • I had a L4/5 discectomy in Nov 08. Just over two months on, I am swimming, walking, doing pilates and (most importantly) back to riding my horse 4 times a week. I can't yet do everything I was doing before I had surgery although it's early days yet, but I am pleased with what I can do so far.
