Just had microdisectomy on L5 S1 and probably should of asked my surgeon but does the Annulus Fibrosus heal? Will the tear itself mend itself

  • I was told no, that the tear can't heal itself, and the opening remains open. This is why it is easy to re-herniate. However, in doing my own research I have found conflicting information. A couple of articles mention giving the tear time to heal itself, which I assumed meant that it actually closes.

So, I am no help to you at all, but perhaps one of the more seasoned members of the forum will be able to enlighten us?

A bit of advice on the healing process, I had the same procedure done a month ago. Whether the tear actually closes or not, I have learned the hard way to go very slowly, be extremely patient, and follow your doctor's advice to the letter.

Good luck, and I hope your post-op progress goes better than mine. :)
