I know everyone recovers differently but I would like to hear recovery times for anyone that had acdf C5-C7 with hardware. I am 4 weeks post op and would be nice to hear from anyone that has had all restrictions lifted and can get back to normal. I was very active before the surgery with working out, golf, cycling long distances.
    Just looking for some hope.
    Thanks,
Apparently we have some similar issues. I had C5-6 fusion on Aug 31. In April I was still completing my daily road bike climbs in the Pyrenees. I have also skied every season for the past 25 years. I have always had a problem with numbing hands on a road bike and it would usually go away however, this time they stayed for a while and I developed some instability walking at the same time and a string of uti's. In MayI was hospitalized for diagnostics and they noted some minor lumbar issues as well as cervical stenosis. I was kicked off my road bicycle and skis. In July I Sarto having difficulty with walking distances with pain in the hips and thighs. Oh, forgot--often after 50-60 km my left shoulder would tighten up. I finally got my surgeon to agree to mountain bike on flat surfaces and a return to the gym for light workouts but this will not start for a couple of weeks. At this point my fingers are still numb and I am tired after walking 5k but I push to walk daily 2x about 10 k total. I too am eager to get back to daily workouts. Although giving up road cycling was difficult, it was not impossible and there are alternatives down the line. Yeah sure, I could continue beating the hell out of myself on a road bike but decide tha the value was not there. I live in the Pyrenees in Spain and can opt to destroy my body many different ways. Oh, not to forget all the times I went down on my road bike as well. Not really good for he back. I discovered a couple of used bike internet sites as well as a boatload of people willing to trade my titanium road bike for a mountain bike of equal vale. Wahoo

I had surgery about about 11 days ago, I take pain killers daily, was not given a brace because I was told it was not necessary because I have a plate inserted. I have called my doctor twice as I continue to have pain in my left arm daily. Is this normal or should I see my doctor again, a friend gave me a soft collar to help with sleep
  • Hi. I am in the beginning of my 3rd week of recovery from Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion of my C4-C6. My pain has, unfortunately, never been below an 8 (on a scale of 1-10) My surgeon could care less. Long story short. I'd like this "Dr." out of my life. He has the "I am God complex" I do not feels he listens to my concerns and barely answers a question when asked, when, on the rare occaision he tries to answer he "dances" around the tough questions.
My question is, how long after surgery am i going to be forced to continue to see this heartless dividual? My post open date is November 3rd. Will I be able to make an appointment with a pain specialist right away (I have one with whom I've been talking and he really seems amazing, caring, understanding and he actually listens to me)
Thank you ahead of time. My apologies on writing get a novel! :P

  • I only had a single level ACDF but It took me I would say 4-5 Months to feel back to "normal". Do not give up hope, some days are harder than others but for me the surgery was 100% worth it. I am at 5 years post op and am just now looking at another surgery. I really did not think I would get that many years relatively pain free. I wish you all the best.
  • I am 2 days post open with C4-C7 acdf. It was a breeze. I haven't had anything more than Tylenol. No more numbness or weakness. No collar.

  • I had C6-7 fusion surgery 7 weeks ago and am still having problems swallowing and it seems like the food sits in a pocket after I swallow. Is this normal?
I also have pain in the back of my neck, shoulder and shoulder blade and take pain pills daily. Anyone have these issues?
    Thanks!
  • Hello:

I had my C5/C6 ACDF surgery this past November 25th and was released the next morning. My throat still sore and I don't even feel the need to take the Percocet every 4 hours. The doctor mentioned that I should wear the neck brace for 2 weeks and after that I could drive as well.
I am walking about 20/25 minutes a day and would like to know other's experience regarding the length of recovery. Any physical therapy involved?
The only surprise so far is a droopy eyelid (Horner Syndrome) on the right eye and I would like to know if anybody had such issue.

    Thanks
