Getting Worse After Surgery

I am just past the 3 month mark of my surgery. L4-S1 disc removal due to degeneration, nerve canal compression, bulging disc, and a bone spur. I was fused from L4-S1. My neuro told me that recovery would be 3 to 6 months.

When I went to the PM last month, she said my recovery would be more like 6 to 12 months. I'm pretty ticked that the surgeon misled me. At 2 months out, I was still in a lot of pain and having tons of spasms. PM said this was a bit unusual.

Over the last month, I've gotten worse. The few things that went away after surgery were replaced with new and different pain in the beginning. Now, almost everything that had gone away is back! On top of the new pain. Has this ever happened to you?

I regret, at this moment, doing the surgery. I see the surgeon next week. I want to know what is going on and will this get better. I'm also going to get a copy of my medical record from the office and see another doctor. I don't know how the surgery that was my only option since everything else didn't work has left me worse off.

Advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I'm starting to lose hope.

  • I felt worse than pre-surgery up until around month 6. then I turned the corner and then was left with my pre-surgery pain and only pain from my fusion when I over-do it. it's such a long recovery. I, too, wondered if I made the right choice... but I don't anymore. I know I needed the stability the fusion provided. the nerve pain didn't go away until TODAY when it was replaced with pleasant buzzing from my trial SCS Implant. however, this was not an option til I was 100% fused, which of course, now I am.

I hope you turn the corner very soon.
  • but mine is c spine. I ended up with more herniated disc's above and below my fusion, although NS says that is not causing my pain?????
I now am one year from when I had my second fusion but am in alot of pain, can not work or do anything I could do before my first surgery 15 months ago. I now am on SSD due to my pain issues. But, not everyone is the same, so, things may still turn around for you, I really hope they do.
Good Luck and don't give up,

DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • I don't know why your surgeon told you that. Mine is c spine and it has been 2 years and 2 months since my last surgery and I do feel better than I did at the 1 year mark. I still have nerve pain and my neck has a lot of osteoarthritis so pain will always be there. A fusion is for stability and I don't think it takes a lot of pain away. I go today for a visit with my surgeon, I don't think I have fused and I will just live with it. I had a lot of ups and downs during the past 2plus years but think I have finally turned the corner. I accept my pain and have learned to live with it.

  • It seems like every day I start having more pain or spasms or the existing pain is worse than the day before. I can add spasms on the inside of my shin to the top of my ankle bone now. It started one night and was a small area, the area of spasms (feels like electrical impulses) has gotten wider. I could go on and on but I'm trying to keep my chin up today.

I see the surgeon on Wednesday. My husband is going with me. Before I leave, I want a copy of my medical records. I'm going to get a second opinion. Can't explain why but I'm beginning to think the doctor made a mistake during surgery.

I see go to PM on Thursday. Get to explain everything and see what drugs they put me on now. If I could say the meds were at least allowing me to live my life with an acceptable degree of quality then I would take them and not worry. But that's not happening. so scared..........
