  • Wayne, I'm 28 days post ACDF c5/c6 c6/c7 My surgeon has me wearing a hard collar, I'm not able to drive at akl due to not being able to see side to side. I go back July 6th for a follow up and hope he releases me back to work. I do hav4e a desk job for most part. I'm still having some swallowing issues. How ever I have been pain/numbness & tingling free since surgery on June 2, 09. THe pain in the first week following surgery was from the position during surgery. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

  • Most doctors will say No driving until the fusion is healed. (3 months) You have to wear a hard collar. a desk job strains the neck muscles the most. So I would plan on being home for 3 months. My surgeon rules were NO riding in a car or driving until my fusion was complete. I also had 2 levels done. It may be different with 1 level. Everyone recovers differently also. Good Luck

  • Hi Wayne-

My surgery was C5-6, and was done March 24, 2009. I HAD to drive a week later, and it was difficult because it was hard to twist my head to look over my shoulder. I was able to drive after a few weeks, but again, it was slow and not much.

I went back to work May 6th... and probably could have come back 4 weeks before that (as far as driving). I commute 75 miles/day.

My recovery has been very successful... no pain on the site, or at least very little. I get more muscle spasms than I get actual pain. Tylenol takes care of it.

I would think the hardest part of your work after surgery would be sitting for too long. You'll get ansy quickly, and will want to get up and walk. I had to get up every 90 minutes until recently (3 months later).

Hopefully your range of motion (ROM) will be good enough for you to go back to work quickly. Good luck!
