Anyone have ACDF Surgery with Lupus on Plaquenil? Cadaver vs. Own Bone?

Am wondering if anyone out there has Lupus (SLE) and has had either success or problems with ACDF surgery. Am looking for suggestions on whether to use my own bone or cadaver bone (I have one doctor who SWEARS I need to use my own bone because my bone quality sucks, and another that asserts cadaver is better for me due to the same reason). I just want whatever will fuse better.
Also, I have been on Plaquenil for 18 years and I hate to go off to have surgery done. The doctors seem unsure whether I should go off to have surgery and heal.

Any suggestions you have are helpful.

  • RA. I had enough bone spurs and arthritis they were cleaning up that they were able to use my own bone. I went off plaqunil even though my doc did not want me to yet my surgeon insisted. If I had it to do over, I would not go off my plaqunil or metheltrexate. My back recovery seems to be coming along fine, but my SLE and RA are trying to stir up and cause trouble. I am not a DR or an expert of any kind, but as a patient, I totally believe my healing would have been faster with my meds. I'd say go with what your Rheumy says not the surgeon. Good luck and God bless.
  • Definitely ask your rheumatologist, but Plaquenil is probably the safest of any of the connective tissue disease treatments to remain on through the surgical process. The argument for cadaver bone comes mostly from how painful harvesting is (of they use your hip), although now some docs use facets, pedicles etc. & grind up. If I had an autoimmune disease, in the back of my mind I would worry about adding any more "foreign" antigens. Might not be science, but it would be in the back of my mind & the mind is a powerful thing!
