SJD? ruled out herniated disc

My husband was injured at work doing heavy lifting about 18 months ago. Since then, he has suffered with lower back, left hip, groin and leg pain. He has seen a series of physical therapists, orthapedic and neurosurgeons and a chiropractor. His variety of diagnosis have included hip bursitis and tendonitis, herniated l4/l5 disc compressing the left L5 nerve root and SJD (by chiropractor). In July 2010 he had hip surgery to lengthen a tendon and relieve the tendonitis/bursitis. About 3 weeks ago he had a discetomy/forimanotomy on L4/L5. He has had good and bod days since surgery but no real pain relief. His main complains now are hip, buttock and groin pain on the left side.
His next follow-up with the surgeon is in 3 weeks and we are contemplating pushing for an MRI to confirm the disc herniation is gone and an SI injection. We discussed this with his physio prior to surgery but the doc felt his symptoms and EMG results indicated the herniated disc was the source of the problem. Now, post-surgery, that doesn't seem to be the case.
