I had cervical spine suregery in 1995 to remove an intradural spinal tumor at C1-C2. I believe that laminectomies were performed at C1 and C2. This will be confirmed with a future MRI. The neurosurgeon used x-ray to check the stability of C1 and C2 at the end of the surgery. He decided that a fusion was not required. After researching the mechanics of the C1-C2 joint, I have become fearful that the joint may become unstable, without a fusion. The tapered joint surfaces of the skull and C2 both tend to spread C1 open. So when a section of the the ring of C1 is removed, the strength of C1 against such spreading is greatly diminished. I have read that this can lead to a dangerous vertical translocation. I have done reasonably well over the past 15 years. However I do have some numbness in my left arm/hand and left leg/foot. Does anyone else have a C1 laminectomy without fusion?
