Ever turn your neck and it snaps?

There are times my neck snaps SO loud people in the next room can hear it. It doesn't hurt except for the second it snaps then all pain goes away. What it is I don't have a clue but my surgeon did do a MRI to make sure nothing was going on. He found nothing. I do know there are times it pops so loud I am afraid to move my neck for fear that I broke something. Lol.
I always get these moments. I get some spasm like pain and then I manipulate my neck and get a snap ( not a pop )and then get relief from it and back to normal. My wife can hear it.

I am wondering if it the vertebrae and ligaments get slightly misaligned and it just needs a little help to get back in place. I'm also thinking that arthritis contributes to the vertebrae getting hung up. After ACDF I have 80% less episodes of this. After taking Klonopin and I have it even less. In my case if i get stressed I think I contribute to the spasm condition.
  • I get the snaps occasionally but I get the feeling of bones grinding while turning my head all the time. Sometimes there is pain with it but sometimes there isn't any but feels weird, like that doesn't seem normal but than again nothing about any of this seems normal.

  • When I was wearing the soft collar I would wratp a scarf or a bandana around it. My students would always want to see how I color cordinated my outfilt. The favorites were tie dyed and smilie faces. Godd luck with the bling. :) This cool rainy weather is killing me. :(
  • I feel my neck pop ever so often or get a kink and need to pop, but I do not have a feeling that the bones are grinding. Have you spoken to your doctor about your concerns?
  • I did tell my Dr. about these episodes of major muscle spasms and the last one I had on April 30th was the worst cramp I've ever had. I'm still having pain in my shoulder and trap but I haven't seen my Family Dr. since this episode but I will see her in a week or so for meds renewal and let her know and maybe she will do an MRI.

I know I have C5-C7 issues with possible impingement shown on x-ray at C7. I've had cervical problems since whiplash 20 years ago but now just getting to me. I really wanted to get an MRI on my neck also but I wanted to have my lower back taken care of first.

When examined by an Orthosurgeon for an (IME) Independent medical exam he says there's something going on with my left hand weakness I know is related to my neck. But most of my pain is lumbar. It seems sometimes for many of us having lumbar=cervical also.

For sure my 70 year old Mom and 75 year old Father who still plays golf and works out at the gym are way healthier than me bone wise. I think my job really did a number on me. Charry

  • I am having additional issues. Had ACDF on 12/8/2010 if C5-6 and C6-67. Having an MRI with contrast on Monday and appointment to review on Tuesday. Recently I have been having lower back issues and muscle spasms throughout my back. I think I am just carrying myself differently and moving differently since the surgery. i will deal with my lower back after my neck is taken care of. Concerned that it is adjecent disk syndrome even though it would be very early for it. My left wrist has an odd feeling my hand gets very cold may turn reddish and then first two joints on each finger turn bluish. Also get a heaviness in my upper arm. Oh joy. My parents are both healthier than I am also.

  • My mum was here the other weekend and wanted to do some gardening. She is 83 and I was asking her not to do it but just leave it.

She said that she was more able to do it than I was.

That made me realise that she was right!!

I so want to get back to being able to do things again.
    I love gardening!

  • Charry, I was 13 yrs old the first time that happened to me. I was on the courtyard with some girls from school after lunch break, I had really long hair and I thought that someone pulled my hair really hard or something..thing was that nobody was behind me. I was unconvinced until about a month later when the same thing happened and this time I was alone. It's been happening ever since, but almost always when I am rolling or moving around in bed (weird I know). My neck issues are C5-6-7.
I hope you are able to get an MRI at some point soon.
  • When you crack your neck and back, it often feels good afterwards, especially if there was a great deal of tension or pain prior. The reason it feels good to crack your neck and back is because pressure is being relieved. Just as when any of your joints crack, gases are being released from within the synovial membranes. This release can cause a temporary relief of pressure or pain. In most cases though, the pressure or pain will return. Many people can forcibly crack their joints, even their neck and back. In some cases, such as when performing stretching or yoga exercises, natural movement may also cracking. You might also visit a chiropractor who will crack your neck and back through a series of manipulations. While these manipulations can relieve pain and pressure in the back or neck, there are some studies that indicate cracking the neck may be linked to an increased risk of stroke..
  • I think I should have worded my title differently but I get horrible sudden spasm where my neck cracks and my face goes numb down my shoulder to my arm and it's a horrible pain that lasts just a few seconds like a jerk as if someone is pulling my hair.

I will also never let a Chiropractor touch my neck again after one did it and never told me he was going to do it. But yes I use to crack my back and neck to relieve pressure but this isn't that. Thanks and take care. Charry
