Hello everyone my name is michelle, Three years ago I hurt my back at work. I ended up with a herneated disc, and an anular tear. I also have a bulging disc and scatia. I also have problems with my si Joints as well. Basically I have been treated by chiropractors, Physical Therapy, ESI, SI joint injections as well, I also have been on many different medications. Nothing seems to help, I am not getting tendon sheath injections that I believe dont help me either. ON the other hand I was recently involved in a motor vechicle accident at the end of march, i was rearended at a high speed.none the less, I have severe whiplash and damage to my neck and shoulders and loss of feeling in my left arm as well.I have constant headaches that dont go away and they turn into migraines. I just started sheath injections in my neck and shoulders. I am on 6 different medications.And I am at my wits end. I am so depressed I dont know what to do anymore, because I am in constant pain. I cant sleep because of the pain ,I took an ambiem and a pircocet several hours ago.
I need some advice, any advice Please

  • Hi Shelli, and welcome to Spine-Health. There is a ton of information about the various spinal injuries and conditions that we suffer from, and treatments available for them, the tabs are at the top of the page.

    That's awful about your car accident. I take it you're either under the care of a pain management doctor or neurologist, from all the injections you've had? There are also injections like radio-frequency ablations (RFA) that burn the nerve endings, which breaks the pain signals, have you ever discussed a treatment like that with your doctor? Have you been referred to a neurosurgeon to discuss the symptoms in your arm? Do you use ice or heat, or a TENS unit to help with your pain at home?

    Also, have you discussed your depression with your primary care doctor? I know you probably don't want to add yet another med to your list, but there are anti-depressants out there that can also help with pain, it might be something you can talk to your doctor about. Depression and pain is a nasty cycle, they feed off of each other. Depression causes a lot of undue stress on our bodies and can make the pain worse. Also, some pain management offices have a psychologist on staff, if it's feasible, you might find seeing one beneficial to you, they can teach you different coping strategies on dealing with chronic pain.

    Anyways, I hope there's something in there that might help you out, if you haven't tried it already. All I can say is hang in there, and you've found a great site full of information and a wonderful community of people who understand what you are going through. I hope you can find some relief.

  • Kelly,
    Yes I am under the care of a Pain Management Dr. I am also under the care of a neurologist and a neurosurgeon, and a ortho and now they want me to see a spine specialist as well.I use heat also and a Tens unit. I am at my wits end with this whole thing. I havent slept at all in the last few days, and if I do get any sleep it is only a few hours a night. I have constant headaches that never go away. I am just plain exhausted and dont know how much more I can handle!

  • Welcome to Spine-Health.

    I think it's possible that once you start working with a spine specialist, hopefully fellowship-trained and only works on spines, that you'll feel like you have more hope. I say that because it may be that this new doctor will have a plan of action and that in itself can make you feel a little better.

    Keep doing what you can with meds, icing and the TENS unit and I hope your new spine specialist will put you on the path to a decent, less-pain life.

    Please keep us posted.
  • Shelli;

    I've suffered from an ongoing headache for the past 3 years. Mostly tension headaches, which progress into migraines, and I also get what's called ice-pick headaches, feels like someone is driving a spike through my skull and under my eye. Sometimes my skull is so sensitive, the pressure of laying on the pillow just makes it worse. I do get occipital injections, which are given in the skin on the back of the head, right around where the little bump is on the skull. It numbs the occipital nerves and gives some relief for a little while. I take Advil x-strength liquid gel caps, have been the best for me for the normal tension headaches, and if I feel a migraine coming on, I take Imitrex. The only problem with that is if you don't take it early enough, it doesn't help. I have an extra long heating pad, so that I can extend it up around my head and still have it on my neck as well. Sometimes the heat helps. I think the day that I wake up with no headache, I'll feel a sense of loss, as it's been with me for so long, lol. Ask your pm about the occipital injections if you haven't already tried them, they do give me some relief, and there are others on the site who get them too.

  • HI,
    Geez, you do have your share of problems and pain! Great idea to see the spine dr...get an MRI and take it from there...I think there is more going on, that shots and tens units will help.
    Hope you find relief soon, and let us know how you're doing! Lots of people on this site with muliple problems so you've come to the right place for help and support!

  • I cannot sleep due to the pain, it has been 3 nights with no sleep or very little sleep! I finally feel asleep at 530 this morning and was able to get a few hours of light sleep, I am taking ambien which is not working. Thinking there is a pinched nerve in my shoulder or neck cuz i am having awful pain in the left arm and it goes numb all the time, the right arm feels funny also but not as bad as the left. I have no strength and am feeling very weak, probably part to do with not getting much sleep.
