Hello, I was diagnosed with DDD in 2007 when I had to have C5-T1 fused and had an implant placed in to help with mobility. I had to have that done because of the severe congenital stenosis that was discovered. I also discovered 3 lumbar bulging discs that we managed at the time with steroid injections. I had just turned 34. In the following year, I had my hip replaced, and it failed.. resulting in a revision in 2009. I have been managing my daily pain well up until a month ago when my back pain came back with a vengeance. I found out the remaining 3 discs in my neck are now bulging and I have some in my mid thoracic area and recurrence of pain in the lumbar. I feel like my spine is crumbling to pieces. I'm 38. I'm scared because I only have 3 discs left in my neck and now they are bulging and I do not know what can be done if there is stenosis occurring in those as well. Can a person function with all the discs in their neck malfunctioned? That is where I am at and I am having a hard time finding a doctor to even help. I see a pain specialist on Monday... my previous neurosurgeon has retired... I feel lost and scared to death that I will have to have my entire back redone. I'm terrified.

  • Howdy Brenda, and Welcome to Spine Health!!! I can understand your concerns as I have similar. Next month thanks to a failed fusion destabilizing my neck, I will be fused from C4-T2, and I too have expressed concerns about the last 2 levels going in the future.

Once you (at least speaking for the neck) go past 3 levels, your selection of surgeons also go down. Not all are comfortable over 3 levels - and this I've been told by several surgeons!! I lucked out on my search and have a really good surgeon that routinely deals with multiple levels.

The only thing I can think of presently is try not to overdue it with your neck, protect it. Can you function with the whole shabang locked down, yes. It sounds like you have an ADR in one of your cervical levels? I'm not a candidate for one, so mine is going to be locked down. What state are you in?

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
