Had 3 mo. appt. with surgeon

I had my 3 mo. check up from the 2 fusions and the open laminectomy on old work.
I've been really bummed out over the slow slow progress. I told the surgeon that I still can"t walk over 5 min. and the pain is still incredible. And the recovery is suppose to be much further along at 3 mo. than it is.
He said the time frame would be much longer for me because of so many surgeries, the lousy shape I was in, my age, and the amount of surgery that I had in that 1 surgery. So he said he wasn't too surprised. But that I wore the brace for so long and the muscles got way out of shape from depending on the brace for too long. No one told me I could take it off. wth!
Anyway he said I needed to get into physical therapy asap and go at it real slow. And PT was the missing link. I hope he's right!
I also saw my pain management Dr. and he was afraid that it was to soon for p.t. And advised me to quit if they hurt me at all. So, We'll see.

  • Some dr,s believe the sooner the brace is removed the beter, Walking longer each day without the brace on is already part of the pt done at home before going in to pt,

Lets face it as long as hardware is holding like it should then brace is mostly as a reminder not to bend in a position you should not move in, But the muscles should carry the body just walking,

After more then 1 surgery yep it sure takes a lot longer to recover and have to tolerate more pain while recovery,

Just hang in there dude, This aint your 1 st rodeo so time to saddle up cowboy,
Strap on that gun belt and load those bullet strap with pain piills,

A cowboy dont show up to a gun fight without his 357 magnum and plenty of amo and pain pills,

Good luck and keep strong, Whisrling the song to the magnificent 7 theme!

  • In there Jim, Believe me I know how it is to feel like you should be so much further along in surgery, because I also share the same feelings about mine 5 weeks out.Time seems to go so slowly while we are recovering.

Three months is not that long though, and now that you can add physio to the mix, it will keep you busy and you will see progress. I just started water walking at the pool, and while it is tough, I feel good for moving.

Like your pain management said, take it slow and watch for increased pain, but I hope you will find physio beneficial.
