i am new so please understand if this sounds like me ranting on but i would like to tell you abuut my problems i have been suffering with for over 14 years, I first went to my doctors as my neck had spasamed for no apparant reason and was given pain killers over a period off time a went back with a consant burning like a golf ball between my shoulders and ristricted movement off my neck were it felf as if it was being pulled of my shoulders i was reffered to physo which i couldnt stand as i was in such severe pain i had to stop going i went back and forward to my doctors were i was then reffered to the pain clinic i tried acupunture and steroid injections which again was not helping my pain and i was now extreamly depressed as i was in contant pain any thing i did hurt me i was then reffered to a rumatoligist and was given a diaganosis of fibromialgia as he said he couldnt find ant thing wrong with me i started to feel as all this pain was in my head and that i was being mardy but i new i was in pain and why so again back and forth to my doctors who just kept perscribing me with pain killers were the side affects were bad nausea all the time and makin me drowsey i had no quality off life, i also told my doctor that i was suffering with dead arms numbness and more pain killers untill i had no choice to ring them up as i couldnt walk or talk as i was gettin shooting pains like electric shocks all over my body when i moved i was as i result of having to use a mobility scooter when i could at times it was even to bad to use that i became house bound my husband had to take care of me, eventualy the doctors sent me for an mri scan after 14 years off suffering the doctor said to me quote ( you dont want them to find any thing with this scan as it would mean you need major nuro surgery ) which of course scared the life out of me so i waited 6 weeks for the app no rush and 10 days to get my results as soon as the doctors phoned me and said i need to come down to the surgery i new there was some thing wrong and yes the mri scan had clearly shown severe disc degeneration on the c5 c6 c7 cervical spine my c5 and c6 had disc bulge but my c7 disc had degenerated so severly that it was constricting my spinal cord and as a result i had major surgery ( smith robinson procedure onmy birh day how ironic is that i dont now how my doctor could look me in te face after all them years of pain and suffering i am though now in the process of sueing them for medical negligence its not a decsion i have taken lighlty but as a result i am disabled on benefits will never work again my husband had to stop working as he was self employed we are going to lose our house as we can not keep up with the mortgage payments and other bills i feel as though i been greatly let down by my doctors and the other proffesionals i had seen over the years all for not reffering me for a very important routine mri scan thank you for reading my story of events iam 42 years old now thank you again claire anna hall

  • I dont understand how it can take 14 years to have an mri, Even a pain specialist needs to know what he is treating while he is treating a person and usualy will ask to see if your spine specialist has sent you for an mri or ct or mylogram if not all tests,

Its common that a regular dr might over look and assume fibro and many other things but soon as a referal is made to a neuro surgen for spine they wont even see you usualy unless you had mri,

So not geting an mri for 14 years is mostly unheard of, I would of changed dr,s the 1 st year if my dr never even asked for an mri to look for the cause of my symptoms,

Mri is the very 1 st step to look for any cause and if it was never done you must have been seeing not a spine specialist,

Many people assume every neuro treats spine and thats not true, Some neuro and even neuro surgens might only treat brain related issues vs spine issues,

Very sorry you had such a hard long road, But now that they finaly know the cause have they done the surgery? And if so how did it turn out?

    Best wishes,

  • hello and thank you for your reponse,

yes it took 14 years and that many appoinments to my doctors i have lost count i was not offered an mri x-ray ct scan nothing wasnt even reffered to a spine sepecialist untill i was in that much pain and so serverly disabled with it i was offered an mri i am begin to wounder that my doctor didnt belive me i was starting to think that my self that there wasnt any thing wrong i was sick of family and friends not beliving i was in pain as i didnt look disabled
I only got to see the nero surgeon when i got my results back from the mri scan who was very good i had mylopathy constriction of my spinal cord at c7 disc and had spinal fusion ( smith robinson procdure )which was a sucess the shooting pains have gone but the pain is still there as he said as a result of 14 years i am expected to have this for the rest of my life as it wasnt delt with eariler enough and i will also have to have more surgery on c5 c6 as they are already showing signs of disc degeration they are bulging out i am 42 now so i was 28 when i first went with my neck problem thank you claire ana hall

  • Just curious, but do you live in a very small town? It just sounds like small town mentality. I had the same problems and so any time I wanted to see a doctor, I knew I had to drive to Ft. worth or Dallas. Small town doctors are sometimes not very good and don't want to admit it so they will gladly give you your meds and send you on your way. Ours had been the only GP for over 20 years and refused to learn "e-prescribing" or didn't believe in using computers so my appointments were always mixed up. The scheduler would schedule me for Wednesday but put down Tuesday and i would come Wednesday and she would tell me I missed my appointment. I would then have to show her the appt card to prove her wrong! I finally realized if I wanted someone to figure out what was wrong I was going to have leave the small town and that is exactly what I did.

So sorry for the lost years and pain and suffering. I hope you do sue for negligence and pain and suffering, the doctors need to be held accountable!

Grade 4 tear in l4/l5 was missed in first MRI so did injections for a year
SI joints "messed up" not sure if I will get them fused at a later time
    Had Open PLIF L4/L5 5/28/13
Woke up to permanent nerve damage in legs and feet.
