See another Dr or just let it rest?

Hello everyone

I've been struggling with the ongoing pain from my congenital spinal stenosis and disc bilges. The pa u n management Dr has had me on Butrans 15 and Norco 5 4 times a day. As I've posted earlier the Dr is of the opinion that any more or different medication wouldn't be appropriate . I have a bilobed disc bulge in my upper thoracic spine that I've gotten 2 conflicting opinions on. one says surgery too risky. the other Dr said risk of paralysis high if i do nothing.neither of the neuros are board certified. at the time of dx on this i didn't know the importance of getting a board cert Dr. Inmy community there is only one board cert neuro. The conflicting recommendations have weighed on my mind. I'd like to have a dr who specializes in thoracic give an opinion. Id have to travel to St Louis to see one. it's only about a 2 hour trip but the expense of seeing another Dr is considerable. I guess my question and request for opinions here is. ..how common is it to get 2 conflicting opinions? is effective pain control impossible when you you are talking spinal?

Hi lowlevelrebel, I had thoracic spine pain and went to my NS and after viewing MRI and CT scan which showed herniation at T7-T8 with calcification he said that since thoracic problems are rare he would operate. He sent me to Duke which is 4 hr. drive. He said he was best in NC as he does several thoracic surgeries a week so I felt comfortable with him. It was difficult for us though. Since it was such a long drive we would have to get hotel room everytime we went for consultation. I was not able to spend 8 hrs. in vehicle and another 2-4 hr. in clinic waiting to see him so always turned into 2 day ordeal. When I had microdiscectomy on May 24 we drove down the day before. I only spent one night in hospital but was not ready for long ride home so we stayed an extra 2 nights in Durham hotel. We were away from our kids for 4 days and that was the hardest part for me. I was fortunate that my GP and NS both agreed on what I should do and had surgery within 6 weeks of diagnosis. If you have a doctor in mind or that has been recommended then by all means make an appt. as soon as possible. It can take awhile to get in with these very busy specialists. I hope all goes well and please keep me informed.

    hugs,
    kelli
