Seeking help making a C1-C2 fusion decision

I have seen a cervical specialist at the University of Iowa orthopedics department in Iowa City (I live 120 miles away in Des Moines). After many nearly a year of neck pain and headaches, an epidural, two RFAs, 24 PT sessions, several MRIs, CTs and an MRA, the doc recommended I have a C1-C2 fusion with some cleaning up of the spondylosis in the C3-C4.

I have confidence in this surgeon who is has done hundreds if not thousands of cervical procedures. However, in his nine years at this teaching hospital he has only performed this particular procedure three times. He told me that each one was successful. I was hoping to find a doc who had done more than three C1-C2 fusions. The University of Iowa ortho department is rated 15th best in the nation by U.S. News and he is their top cervical person. Is my concern about being #4 unnecessary or should I look for a surgeon who has done more than three of these? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

  • Hi hsiegelman, I'm in a similar situation and looking at a c1-c2 fusion in mid February. Did you ever get your surgery?
