microdiscectomy and annular tear

Does having a microdiscectomy repair the annular tear, or is that suppose to heal on its own? If so, about how long until the tear heals? I just had an MRI 3 months after microdiscectomy, and it is still showing the annular tear, with back pain.. Has me a bit concerned.

So I guess my next guest after reading that is, that in theory, after 3-4 months, the annular tear that is leaking should scar over? My MRI shows it is still leaking, more on the right now then the left surgical side. Hopefully it will scar over and give me pain relief. Anyone know anything about facet pain?

what the MRI report said, and what my surgeon showed me was "fluid collection" not leakage. My surgeon showed me where it was happening at the l4-5 level pushing against the thecal sac. He also showed me the white enhanced spot on the MRI which was the annular tear, so I know the disc hasn't scarred over at this point after surgery and is actually pushing on the opposite side of the disc now.

  • I think I may not have said things correctly, as again, it is not a fluid substance, but more of a solid that falls into the spinal canal, which makes the "annular tear or fissure" seem like it would "leak" something.
