C1 C2 fusion, Os Odontoideum, Hangman's Fracture: Can I talk to anyone that has had surgery?

Hello everyone,

I'm starting this post in hopes that I can connect with someone that has had a C1 C2 fusion surgery. I'm a 37 year old male in relatively good health. I don't have any neurological symptoms, yet two orthopedic surgeons are recommending surgery since I have significant movement with my C2 due to an OS Odontoideum.

Since I don't have symptoms, I'm not eager to have surgery because I'd likely lose 50% of the rotation I currently have in my neck. However, I'm highly concerned about the potential catastrophic outcome (paralysis, death) should I be involved in some type of trauma. Both doctors have said that it's not an easy decision and that they'd respect the decision not to have surgery.

Is there anyone out there that has been in a similar situation? Can you share your experience? How about those of you that have had a C1 C2 fusion? Can you explain the pros and cons of life after the surgery?
