torn rotator cuff after 2 level ACDF

I hope you do well in your therapy.

Thanks. First session of PT went well and I feel in less pain and I have a teeny bit more mobility in the shoulder so I'm hopeful.

Was looking through my old posts to see what I said about my shoulder. Wanted to bump this up and get updates from those who commented and see how your shoulders are now? I had the surgery in June and it was worse than they thought based on the MRI and I had a full tear in my anterior labrum down to the bone and was 4 inches long into the armpit and was anchored (bankart tear and slap tear), bicep tendon was shredded, rotator cuff tear was still minor and shaved off, distal clavicle decompression of subacromium. In week 8 of recuperation and PT hell now. Still in a lot of pain but PT is mostly what keeps me hurting. My range of motion is getting better everyday and it feels stronger. They said I have a year before it is fully recovered since it was so significant of an injury and at least another 2-3 months of dr follow up and PT before being released. I still wonder if they tore this all up during my ACDF when they bend you so awkwardly backwards but I will never know. I am so glad I had it done though. I was laughing at my post saying it would have to be hanging from a thread before I would agree to the surgery because little did I know that a year later I would be in non stop excruciating pain and unable to raise my arm anymore and unable to sleep and begging for surgery. I was so foolish thinking it would go away or stay the same and I could avoid it. Had I known that that year of pain that I went through was so unnecessary, I would have slapped myself into doing it sooner. I cannot tell at this early stage whether this has taken care of all my pain and my neck can settle down or if I will need another neck surgery or not but I am hopeful it did the deed.

Hope all are doing well! LA Spiney, Motor1, and Kay...I would love to hear your updates.

    Hi joowee40

We talked about this in another thread, but I wanted to chime in since I had rotator cuff surgery for a tear in January 2016 followed by 3 months of PT. It was my 3rd rotator cuff surgery on the same arm, which followed a cervical fusion years ago on the same side at c5c6.

I can move my arm without much limitations now, and the pain is mostly gone.  The tear was in the supraspinatus that prevented me from lifting my arm above my waist. It's okay now, except when I move my right arm across my body pointing to the left, then I feel a very deep pain that makes me want to reconsider life on planet earth... so I don't do that unless I have to. Oh and I have a small tremor in my right hand that I'm concerned about. I'm sure there's something in there growing, but I'm not at the point where I want anyone to dig it out. I'm still doing the PT exercises and getting monthly massages and will do that from now until whenever. I don't ever want to have another shoulder operation, ever again.

steve-hahaha on the reconsider life on planet earth. First smile I have cracked all morning. Ditto on the never ever want it again.

Did you read my stupid post from a year ago? BTW you have no idea how much your comments about me trying to do and be too much this early eased my guilty conscience. I packed my laptop up and went home after that.

  • ha, I'm happy about that!  and i did read your post where you said you wouldn't have surgery. We can all say things like that, but if it were true, all of the surgeons in the world would be unemployed.

  • Wonder if your accessory nerve was compromised

  • shasha830,

I'm not sure what an accessory nerve is but something is causing my hand to tremor. I have to keep telling myself to do the shoulder exercises, because they do make a difference in how I feel. The last PT I had told me in no uncertain terms, that if I let up on the exercises then I would definitely be headed for another rotator cuff surgery. No body wants that, especially not my body.

  • I had replacement disc and fusion C4 C6 1 year ago after surgery,  I had continuous problems with my right shoulder and was told it was impinged . After many visits a couple of falls and finally an MRI scan which  has shown up two rent rim tears one on left shoulder - not as bad as the one on the right.  I am back on as many pain killers as before cervical neck surgery but a different kind of pain  - before cervical neck surgery for bone spur removal as well as disk and fusion replacement I had terrible migraines - fortunately they have gone so that is one good thing.  I have been told by my Specialist for the shoulder that the tears will not get better if left alone and I will need to have both shoulders repaired.  I am doing the worse one first in 2 months time and then the left one - the right arm will have to be in a sling for 6 weeks. The tears can become much bigger if not repaired. My Specialist said that if you were not getting pain they would just monitor them  but I cannot sleep at night for pain or get comfortable.  I like you after going through my spinal operation did not want any more operations but I am told whilst the tear is small it can be done with keyhole surgery so hoping this is the case.  Good luck.  If you want to keep in touch after I have had it done or indeed if you have already gone through the same as I am having done as I see this was in May when you put your comments on this site then please do so.
